DESCRIPTION:Understanding the Herb / Drug Interaction Continuum and Using Risk Assessment Tools \n4 hours of Pharm CE Approved by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine \nIn this 4-hour pre-conference intensive\, Dr. Glen Nagel will cover common concerns and risk potential for drug/herb interactions for the naturopathic physician and clinical herbalist. Dr. Nagel will discuss the most common types of interactions and methods of drug detoxification. Dr. Nagel will present a comprehensive five-point system for determining herb and drug interaction risk potential. He will cover the top ten herbs for potential interaction and the top fifteen most common prescription drugs. For holistic practitioners\, what are the real concerns when combining prescription medication and herbal medicine and what is hype? During this 4-hour pre-conference intensive on drug-herb interactions and using risk assessment tools\, Dr. Glen Nagel will give an overview of the problem with herb /drug interactions and a practical method for determining the potential for a mild\, moderate or severe reaction. The pre-conference intensive will discuss how to identify concerns about the ten herb-drug interactions that every naturopathic physician and clinical herbalist should understand. Herbs discussed are St Johnswort\, Saw Palmetto\, Milk Thistle\, Goldenseal\, Cannabis\, Hemp\, and others. Dr. Nagel will cover the top ten prescribed herbs and their potential interactions and the top 15 most common prescription drugs. Finally\, a review of the current literature and reference material that is useful for the clinician. There are many shades of grey within the field of herb and drug interactions\, this talk aims to bring more clarity to this complex field. \nDr. Glen Nagel\, ND\, has been a practicing herbalist for the last 35 years and a naturopathic physician for 27 years. He has worked in the herbal industry as well as an herbal educator offering classes and courses in herbal medicine. He is also a licensed naturopathic physician in Oregon and has practiced Naturopathic Medicine since 1993 in Montana\, Colorado\, Washington and Oregon. He is a former Assistant Professor of Botanical Medicine at Bastyr University in Kenmore\, Washington. Currently\, he is an adjunct professor and NUNM and a consultant to the herbal industry. He’s involved in keeping nature in naturopathy and has led elective classes in hands on a field study of botanical medicine and nature cure. He has a lifelong interest in plants and nature and believes in teaching with humor and hands-on experience.
